Artist Statement

My work is a kinetic self-portrait that explores the painting process through the structure of experience, memory and movement.  The painting process is central to my work and asks viewers to consider what went into the making of a painting.  Defining the process through the structure of experience, memory and movement allows me a deeper level of engagement with the work during its making and then provides an avenue for the viewer to also engage the work for their own interpretation.     My work does not focus on a single subject but is a collective of ideas and expressions imbued with life experience.  Painting allows associations with life experience which are embedded in the work and are the evidence of its making.  At times the work may be loosely inspired by specific circumstances, feelings, or objects from which I subsequently derive more in depth meaning about each piece.

The primary elements of my work are color, gesture and mark.  Color evolves and manifests into sweeping and dynamic gestures.  Both color and gesture are usually raw and undefined in the early stages.  As a result, it develops into something more specific as the loop of experience, memory and movement plays out.  From the beginning of a work until its completion, the dialogue of painting expands and deflates with ideas and experiences that inform the work in many ways.  The continuous give and take process helps define the meaning of the work contemporaneously.
